SANE

Designing a personalised digital service

People with complex mental health issues currently live in a system that makes it difficult to access the support and services they need.

Removing inequities and social and economic exclusion for these people is the driving force behind SANE. To do this SANE needed to shift its focus towards providing access to life-changing support for these 2 million+ Australians.

The task

Whilst working at Folk, we joined SANE to help navigate this significant transformation, designing a digital support service, a brand narrative, and a new visual identity.

Designing personalised mental health portal

Talking directly to people living with complex mental health and their carers helped us gain valuable insights into the challenges, needs, and main access points used by our audiences. An online portal was identified as the most accessible tool to providing mental health services.

We focused our efforts on key moments in their journey. This included ensuring that onboarding to the service was simple and personalised, and that navigating the portal was intuitive.

Consumer-facing website

The brand had to be more customer-facing and connect with people with complex mental health issues amongst a crowded and confusing sea of mental health brands.

SANE’s identity is crafted around making space for mental health. Letters grow and shrink out of place, and colours are unapologetic—creating a fearless voice for change and a strong, coherent presence across all moments.

Developer handover

The user interface was modelled on the Lighting Design system. This created efficiencies in time with the core components, allowing us to focus on the components that would create the most impact, such as the customisation of messaging and the experience of booking appointments.

As the site is designed for users with complex mental health, the vertical rhythm of the site needed to smooth and present content in the clearest way.

A vertical rhythm sheet defined the spacing between components, ensuring it is easy to scan, and break down the content in digestible groupings.
