Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has a long, proud history of human rights activism as well as a celebration of our diverse communities. With a new brand strategy in place, the Sydney Mardi Gras is now expanding to have a presence in the community throughout the year.

Working alongside the Sydney Mardi Gras team we looked to create an off-season visual identity. ​ SGLMG continues to shine a light on diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice and strive to be visible for the LGBTQI+ community, all year-round, no matter where.

Always on – the Mardi Gras is a beacon of support, hope and celebration for our community. Working alongside the Sydney Mardi Gras team we looked to create an off-season visual identity. ​ SGLMG continues to shine a light on diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice and strive to be visible for the LGBTQI+ community, all year-round, no matter where.

The light device

LGBTQI+ brands are normally presented with a colourful rainbow. We needed to keep the identity colourful so it comfortably sat within the LGBTQI+ space but modernised it.

We created a series of textured gradients that lived in the light beam device. These gradients were layered and combined to create a distinctive look. 

 

The beam device is used in two main ways and holds imagery, typography, and other graphics.

Modernising the rainbow

LGBTQI+ brands are normally presented with a rainbow. We needed to keep the identity colourful so it comfortably sat amongst the LGBTQI+ space, but how could we make this distinctive?

We created a series of textured gradients that lived in the light beam device.
